Kim Jong Un Calls for ‘Exponential’ Nuclear Arsenal Expansion After Touring New Production Facility

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited a newly operational nuclear material production facility and called for an “exponential” expansion of the country’s atomic arsenal, state media KCNA reported on Wednesday. The announcement marks a fresh escalation in Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions and comes as tensions simmer over the role of U.S. forces in the region.straitstimes

Doubling Down on Nuclear Production

Kim said during the visit that production capacity for weapons-grade nuclear material had more than doubled over the past five years, and he instructed officials to further increase output to meet long-term strategic goals, according to a Reuters report carried by the Straits Times. KCNA said Kim was briefed on new production processes incorporating more advanced technology and reviewed current output targets and future plans.straitstimes

A consultative meeting on bolstering nuclear forces was held the same day, at which Kim outlined guidelines for accelerating both the qualitative and quantitative expansion of the arsenal. He described the country as having “set a transformative milestone for the advancement of nuclear capabilities” and said officials had made “responsible and significant decisions” on a plan to strengthen nuclear forces “exponentially”.straitstimes

The visit follows months of intensified nuclear activity. Satellite imagery analyzed earlier this year showed heightened operations at North Korea’s Yongbyon Nuclear Complex, with new buildings and steam plumes suggesting increased plutonium production. The International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed that North Korea has expanded its nuclear activities at the site, with construction of a new uranium enrichment facility comparable to existing ones. A Bloomberg analysis in April estimated the arsenal could eventually surpass those of Israel, Pakistan and the United Kingdom.rfa

North Korea Lashes Out at U.S. Commander’s ‘Dagger’ Remark

Separately, North Korea on Wednesday criticized remarks by General Xavier Brunson, the commander of U.S. Forces Korea, who described South Korea as “the dagger in the heart of Asia” from China’s east coast during a recent podcast interview. Pyongyang said the comments reflected Washington’s strategy to use South Korea to contain China.japantimes

The remarks had already drawn a sharp rebuke from the Chinese embassy in Seoul, which said Brunson had “truly crossed the line”. South Korea and the United States are in discussions over the comments, according to Channel News Asia. About 28,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea, ostensibly to guard against North Korea, though speculation is building that Washington may seek to expand USFK’s role in countering China’s regional influence.channelnewsasia
