Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations has formally demanded that six Arab states be held legally accountable for their role in facilitating the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, calling their actions acts of aggression under international law.
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the Security Council president on Thursday, Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani rejected claims made by Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Jordan in earlier correspondence to the world body. Iravani characterized the six countries’ invocation of self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter as legally invalid, arguing their actions instead constitute “internationally wrongful acts” that amount to aggression under UN General Assembly Resolution 3314.parstoday
“The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates once again its clear and consistent position that all States whose internationally wrongful acts have played a role in the United States’ and the Israeli regime’s aggression against its sovereignty and territorial integrity must be held accountable,” Iravani stated in the letter, as reported by Iran’s Press TV.presstv
The Iranian envoy demanded that the Gulf states and Jordan make “full reparation to the Islamic Republic of Iran, including compensation for all material and moral damage caused by their internationally wrongful acts”. He rejected as “unfounded and unsubstantiated” the Arab states’ claims regarding the war, which Iran says has killed more than 3,375 people and damaged over 125,630 civilian structures.presstv
Iravani cited assessments by the Iranian armed forces and pointed to recent remarks by the commander of U.S. Central Command, Admiral Brad Cooper, who praised Bahrain, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan as “exceptional teammates” — language the Iranian diplomat characterized as confirmation of their complicity.presstv
The letter marks the latest salvo in a diplomatic battle that has played out at the UN since the U.S.-Israeli military operation — codenamed Operation Epic Fury — began on February 28. In March, the Security Council adopted Resolution 2817, which condemned Iran’s retaliatory strikes across the Gulf and reaffirmed the Arab states’ right to self-defense under Article 51, passing with 13 votes in favor and abstentions from China and Russia.betterworldcampaign
Iran has repeatedly contested that framing, arguing the U.S. and Israel launched an unprovoked attack and that the Gulf states allowed their territory and airspace to be used for strikes against Iran. Tehran has said the Security Council’s failure to address the initial U.S.-Israeli offensive undermines its credibility.trtworld
The exchange underscores a widening rift between Iran and its Arab neighbors over legal responsibility for the conflict, with no diplomatic resolution in sight.
