As the 2026 FIFA World Cup prepares to kick off across North America, two of the world’s largest AI platforms have staked their claims on the tournament — Google’s Gemini through sponsorship deals with multiple national teams, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT through a personal partnership with Lionel Messi.
Google has quietly assembled a portfolio of at least seven national team sponsorships ahead of the tournament, according to SponsorUnited. The most prominent deals are with Argentina, France, and the United States.linkedin
The Argentine Football Association signed its partnership with Google in March, making Gemini the main global sponsor of the national team. The deal places Gemini branding on Argentina’s training kit and integrates the AI tool into the coaching staff’s workflow. “All this technology will allow us to focus heavily on injury prevention, tactical analysis, and many other real-time aspects that involve decision-making by the coaching staff,” AFA commercial director Leandro Petersen said at a Times Square unveiling in May.chatai
Wired reported that Gemini will be used to assess Argentina’s strategies, formations, performance metrics, and opponent statistics. For France, the partnership extends beyond branding — Google’s Pixel phones will serve as the official smartphone of the French national team, with a “Shot on Pixel” program for content creation. Google also became an official sponsor of both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams in a multiyear deal announced in May, with exclusivity in the search and consumer AI categories, according to Sports Business Journal.9to5google
Separately, Lionel Messi debuted a personal partnership with OpenAI’s ChatGPT ahead of what is expected to be his final World Cup. The collaboration, announced on Instagram this week, features an AI-generated ad in which Messi demonstrates ChatGPT’s image tools — specifically prompting the model to style his hair in Argentina’s national colors.techradar
OpenAI’s pitch centers on helping fans “experience football in new ways throughout the tournament season,” though critics have noted the campaign feels more like a tech demonstration than a sports partnership.techradar
The Gemini and ChatGPT deals are part of a wider AI integration into the 2026 World Cup. Lenovo, FIFA’s official technology partner, developed Football AI Pro — a generative AI tool providing all 48 participating teams access to over 2,000 performance metrics. The tournament will also feature AI-enabled 3D player avatars to support semi-automated offside decisions and an Intelligent Command Center monitoring operations in real time.fifa
The convergence of AI companies and elite sport marks a shift in how technology firms seek visibility. Where previous World Cups attracted telecoms and beverage brands, 2026 belongs in part to the companies building large language models — competing for attention on training kits and in Instagram ads alike.
