Barcelona have agreed a deal worth €80 million (£69.3 million) with Newcastle United to sign winger Anthony Gordon, with the 25-year-old set to fly to Spain on Thursday for a medical, marking one of the largest transfers of the summer window.
The agreement came together quickly on Wednesday after Barcelona submitted a formal offer earlier in the day. According to The Athletic, the deal includes a sell-on clause as part of the arrangement. Sky Sports News confirmed the fee at £69.3 million inclusive of add-ons, with Gordon now set to undergo his medical in Barcelona on Thursday.nytimes
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco traveled to the United Kingdom to finalize the deal, beating out Bayern Munich, who had also been in talks with Newcastle. Sky Germany reported that Bayern were ultimately not planning to make a rival bid. Gordon, who missed the final six games of Newcastle’s season, had already agreed personal terms with the La Liga champions.skysports
The signing has immediate implications for Marcus Rashford, who has been on a season-long loan at Barcelona from Manchester United. Barcelona hold a £26 million option to buy Rashford, but the club’s financial constraints have prevented them from honoring the original agreement. Manchester United have refused to renegotiate the fee, and reports from earlier this month indicated confidence at Old Trafford that Rashford could be sold for a higher price elsewhere.skysports
Gordon’s arrival as a direct competitor on the left wing could effectively end any remaining possibility of Barcelona exercising their option on Rashford. The England forward’s loan concluded with a difficult 3-1 defeat to Valencia on Saturday in what may prove to be his final appearance for the club.mirror
For Newcastle, the sale represents a major financial windfall. Barcelona’s offer exceeded the £75 million threshold that the Tyneside club had been holding out for during negotiations. Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 and established himself as one of the Premier League’s most productive wingers, earning regular England caps in the process. The funds could allow Newcastle to reinvest in their squad as they continue building under Eddie Howe.skysports
