FIFA has rejected Iran’s request to move its 2026 World Cup group stage matches from the United States to Mexico, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Friday. The decision means Iran will play at its originally assigned venues — SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and Lumen Field in Seattle — despite the ongoing military conflict between the US and Iran.
“FIFA ultimately decided that the matches cannot be moved from their original venues,” Sheinbaum said at a press conference on April 10. She added that FIFA viewed the proposed relocation as requiring “an enormous logistical effort”.yahoo
The ruling ends weeks of uncertainty that began in mid-March, when Iranian football federation president Mehdi Taj said on the Iranian embassy’s X account in Mexico that Iran would “undoubtedly refrain from traveling to America,” citing remarks by President Donald Trump suggesting the US could not guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team. Sheinbaum at the time said Mexico was willing to host the matches if FIFA approved.timesofisrael
FIFA President Gianni Infantino had already signaled the outcome on March 31, telling reporters in Antalya, Turkey, where Iran’s squad was holding a training camp, that “the matches will be where they should be according to the draw”. Infantino also confirmed Iran’s participation in the tournament, calling them “an exceptionally strong team”.aljazeera
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to begin on June 11 at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Iran’s Group G schedule has them facing New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21, both at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, followed by Egypt on June 26 at Lumen Field in Seattle.bbc
The decision leaves open the question of whether Iran will ultimately travel to the United States for the tournament. As Bloomberg reported, this marks the first time a World Cup host has been in a state of armed conflict with a participating nation. If Iran withdraws, FIFA rules allow for a replacement team to take its spot in the draw.bloomberg
