F1 Teams Prepare Major Upgrades for Miami Grand Prix

Formula 1’s unexpected five-week hiatus — created by the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix due to the Middle East conflict — has handed teams a rare mid-season development window, and nearly every outfit on the grid plans to arrive at the Miami Grand Prix on May 1-3 with meaningful car upgrades.

Ferrari Eyes Power Unit Gains at Monza

Ferrari has mapped out an intensive April testing schedule headlined by a 200-kilometre filming day at Monza on April 22. The session will allow the Scuderia to evaluate elements of a major upgrade package for the SF-26, with a particular focus on power unit energy management and reducing the effects of super clipping on straights — a harvesting technique that has emerged as a key battleground in the sport’s new era of 50-50 hybrid power units. Ferrari has also received FIA approval for an engine upgrade under the sport’s ADUO regulations, and will conduct wet-weather testing with Pirelli at Fiorano on April 9-10.autoracing1

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur set the tone after Suzuka, telling Sky Italy: “Everyone will be rolling out upgrades in Miami, allowing time to refine their software, which is why I mentioned that a new championship will commence.”motorsport

Grid-Wide Arms Race

McLaren and Mercedes will head to the Nürburgring on April 14-15 for a Pirelli dry-tyre development test, with world champion Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri set to drive, according to GPblog. The test replaces a planned Bahrain session lost to the cancellations.gpblog

At Cadillac, the fledgling 11th team is bringing upgrades to every race as it tries to close the gap to the established midfield. Valtteri Bottas has confirmed new parts are coming for Miami — the squad’s first home race — while Sergio Perez labelled the Japanese Grand Prix “our strongest race so far” after finishing on the lead lap for the first time.yahoo

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies acknowledged deeper issues with the RB22 and said the break would be used to “make significant progress,” though he cautioned against expecting “miracles” in Miami.motorsport

Williams Draws a Line

Perhaps no team feels the urgency more than Williams. Team principal James Vowles described Suzuka — where Carlos Sainz finished 15th and Alex Albon 20th — as “painful” and pledged to use the break as a turning point. “I want to make it a line in the sand and make sure we add performance every race going forward,” Vowles wrote on X. “These next five weeks will be some of the hardest for us, purposefully so, as we dig deep and make sure that we come back with a car in Miami that is worthy of scoring points.”motorsport
