FIFA announced on Tuesday that YouTube will serve as a Preferred Platform for the 2026 World Cup, a deal the governing body called a “game-changing partnership” that will allow rights-holding broadcasters to stream the opening minutes of every match live on the video platform for the first time in the tournament’s history.fifa
Under the agreement, FIFA’s official Media Partners will have the option of live streaming the first 10 minutes of every match on their respective YouTube channels, designed as what the Associated Press described as “an appetizer encouraging young fans then to watch on traditional channels such as network TV”. Broadcasters will also be able to stream a select number of full matches on their YouTube channels.apnews
Beyond live action, the partnership opens up FIFA’s Digital Archive on its YouTube channel, including full-length past matches and iconic moments from the sport’s history. Media Partners will also gain access to extended highlights, behind-the-scenes footage, Shorts, and video-on-demand content, with additional opportunities to monetize their YouTube content.fifa
A global cohort of YouTube creators will receive what FIFA described as “unprecedented access” to the tournament, offering perspectives including human stories, tactical breakdowns, and behind-the-scenes content. Creators will also gain early access to FIFA’s Digital Archive ahead of the tournament to help promote the competition.fifa
“FIFA is delighted to welcome YouTube as a Preferred Platform for the FIFA World Cup 2026,” said FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström. “This collaboration with YouTube reinforces our ambition to maximise the tournament’s impact across the ever-evolving media landscape”.fifa
Justin Connolly, YouTube’s VP and Global Head of Media and Sports, said the partnership would “help usher in the next generation of fans while showcasing that no other platform unites the world around major moments like YouTube”.fifa
The financial details of the agreement were not revealed, according to AP News. The 2026 World Cup is scheduled for June 11 through July 19 across venues in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Traditional broadcasters retain primary rights to the tournament, with the YouTube deal functioning as a complement aimed at expanding digital reach and engagement.gamereactor
