FIFA to Monitor Iran Amid US Military Strikes Ahead of 2026 World Cup

FIFA will “monitor developments” in Iran following the launch of a joint US-Israeli military operation against the country, raising fresh uncertainty around this summer’s World Cup as one of its co-hosts wages war against a qualified nation.

Grafstrom Addresses Strikes at Cardiff Meeting

Speaking at the International Football Association Board’s annual general meeting in Cardiff on Saturday, FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafstrom confirmed that the governing body is tracking the situation but stopped short of announcing any changes to tournament plans.espn

“I read the news this morning the same way you did,” Grafstrom told reporters. “We had a meeting today and it is premature to comment in detail, but we will monitor developments around all issues around the world.”espn

Grafstrom pointed to the World Cup draw held in Washington in December, in which all 48 teams participated, and said FIFA’s priority remains unchanged. “Our focus is on a safe World Cup with all the teams participating. We will continue to communicate as we always do with the three governments,” he said. “Everybody will be safe.”espn

Iran’s Path to the World Cup — and Into US Venues

Iran qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament through the Asian Football Confederation and was drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. The team is scheduled to open against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles, face Belgium on June 21, also in Los Angeles, and close the group stage against Egypt on June 26 in Seattle.cbssports

The fact that all of Iran’s matches are set to be played on US soil adds a layer of complexity. Iran’s football federation boycotted the December draw ceremony in Washington over visa disputes, with federation president Mehdi Taj accusing the United States of taking “purely a political position” on entry requirements for its delegation.si

‘Operation Epic Fury’

President Donald Trump announced the strikes in an eight-minute video posted to Truth Social early Saturday, describing “major combat operations” aimed at dismantling Iran’s missile capabilities, its navy, and regional proxy forces. Trump said Iran had “rejected every opportunity to renounce their nuclear ambitions” despite repeated US efforts to negotiate.cbsnews

The operation, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury,” follows US airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities last June and comes amid an already turbulent buildup for the World Cup. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was in Mexico earlier this week expressing confidence in that country’s ability to co-host the tournament despite cartel violence.vpm

FIFA gave no indication Saturday that the competition format, host cities, or qualifying procedures would be altered. But with the June 11 opening match approaching, the organization faces mounting questions about whether a nation at war with its co-host can safely compete on American soil.getmoresports
