2026 Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony Held in Verona

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics came to a close Sunday with a ceremony titled “Beauty in Action” at Verona’s ancient Roman amphitheater, marking the first time an Olympic ceremony has been staged inside a UNESCO World Heritage site. The event, broadcast live on NBC and streamed on Peacock at 2:30 p.m. ET, capped more than two weeks of competition across northern Italy.yahoo

A Historic Stage

The Verona Arena, built around the first century A.D., is the third-largest surviving Roman amphitheater in Europe, after the Colosseum in Rome and the amphitheater at ancient Capua. Originally constructed for gladiatorial combat, the nearly 2,000-year-old structure has served as an open-air opera house since 1913 and today seats roughly 15,000 spectators. Organizing committee president Giovanni Malagò called it “an eternal stage where history embraces the future”.olympics

The ceremony’s creative team, led by artistic director Alfredo Accatino, designed a central stage shaped like a waterdrop, symbolically linking the mountain venues of the Dolomites with the Po River Valley and the Venetian lagoon. “If the climate continues to change, there won’t be Winter Olympics anymore,” Accatino said in remarks ahead of the event, weaving an environmental message into the celebration of athletic achievement. Performers included international ballet star Roberto Bolle, Italian singer-songwriter Achille Lauro, DJ and producer Gabry Ponte, and actress Benedetta Porcaroli.heavy

Norway Leads, Team USA Sets Records

Norway topped the final medal standings with 41 medals, including 18 gold. The United States finished second with 33 total medals and 12 gold — the most gold medals Team USA has ever won at a Winter Olympics. Host nation Italy placed third with 30 medals, including 10 gold.nbcolympics

Hockey captain Hilary Knight and ice dance silver medalist Evan Bates, both five-time Olympians, carried the American flag into the arena after being elected by their fellow athletes. Knight, competing in her final Olympics, scored a record-setting goal in the gold medal match against Canada that forced overtime, where teammate Megan Keller netted the winner to secure the U.S. women’s third Olympic hockey title.usatoday

Looking Ahead to the French Alps

The ceremony included the traditional lowering of the Olympic flag and its formal handover to organizers of the 2030 French Alps Winter Games, who face a compressed timeline and internal upheaval. For the first time in Winter Olympics history, two Olympic cauldrons — one in Milan, one in Cortina d’Ampezzo — were extinguished simultaneously to close the Games. The Verona Arena will next host the opening ceremony of the 2026 Paralympic Games on March 6.wikipedia
