Johannes Lochner finally has his Olympic gold medal.
The 35-year-old German pilot delivered the performance of his career on Tuesday night at the Eugenio Monti Olympic Sliding Center in Cortina d’Ampezzo, claiming two-man bobsled gold by a commanding 1.34 seconds — the most lopsided margin of victory in the event in 46 years. Paired with push athlete Georg Fleischhauer, Lochner completed the four-run competition in 3 minutes, 39.70 seconds, recording the fastest time in all four heats.ibsf
Germany became the first nation to achieve a podium sweep in any Olympic bobsled event at the 2022 Beijing Games, and has now repeated the feat in the same discipline. Francesco Friedrich, who won two-man gold at both the 2018 and 2022 Olympics, took silver with Alexander Schüller in 3:41.04. Adam Ammour, the 24-year-old European champion competing in his first Olympics, secured bronze alongside Alexander Schaller in 3:41.52.wtop
For Lochner, the victory represents the culmination of years spent in Friedrich’s shadow. After winning silver medals in both the two-man and four-man events at Beijing 2022, Lochner dominated this World Cup season, winning six of seven two-man races heading into the Games. German pilots occupied all three podium positions in six of those races.reuters
“He might be perfect,” American pilot Frank Del Duca told the Associated Press after watching Lochner’s performance in the opening heats.centralmaine
Lochner built a substantial 0.80-second lead after the first day of competition and never looked back. On the coldest night of the Games, icy conditions made the upper portion of the track challenging, but Lochner responded with the fastest final run to seal his victory. The gold medal is his third Olympic medal overall, and he has indicated this was the next-to-last race of his international career.ibsf
Friedrich’s silver medal brings his career Olympic total to four golds and one silver, equaling the all-time record for bobsled pilots set by fellow German André Lange. The 35-year-old, who has won 16 World Championship titles between two-man and four-man events, saw his streak of consecutive Olympic two-man victories end at two.nbcsports
The U.S. sled piloted by Army Sgt. Frank Del Duca with brakeman Joshua Williamson finished fourth in 3:41.96, just 0.44 seconds from bronze. Their fourth-place finish represents Team USA’s best Olympic two-man bobsled result since Steven Holcomb and Steve Langton won silver at the 2014 Sochi Games.usabs
“I’m proud of what we’ve done,” Del Duca said after the race. Romania’s Mihai Tentea and George Iordache delivered a surprise fifth-place finish.stripes
