Cloud Imperium Games’ Star Citizen has reached $1 billion in total player-funded revenue, a milestone hit during the DefenseCon 2956 in-game event on Sunday, May 24. The achievement cements the space simulation as the most expensive crowdfunded project in history, more than 13 years after its original 2012 Kickstarter campaign.
The billion-dollar threshold was crossed on the same day that Cloud Imperium put the Anvil Odin, a 752-meter battlecruiser, on sale at $5,000 for the warbond version and $5,900 using store credit. The ship, which cannot yet be flown in-game and remains a concept, was sold in limited waves to players selected through an “Odin Founders Club” application process. Waves were released every four hours beginning at 4 PM UTC on May 24.youtube
As recently as May 23, PC Gamer reported that Star Citizen was “rapidly approaching $1 billion in player funding” while the game ran a free-to-play period through May 27. At the end of April, the funding tracker sat at approximately $967.6 million. The DefenseCon event, which ran from May 14 through May 27, introduced multiple new ships alongside rolling daily sales that accelerated contributions.robertsspaceindustries
Alongside the funding milestone, the studio has provided updates on Squadron 42, the long-delayed single-player campaign featuring performances from Mark Hamill and other Hollywood talent. Cloud Imperium Games founder Chris Roberts said in early May that the goal remains to release the game in 2026, though he acknowledged industry factors — including the anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto VI — as considerations for timing.reddit
In December 2025, Roberts wrote that Squadron 42 was “fully playable” at over 40 hours in length and moving toward an internal beta. He previously compared its anticipated launch to that of GTA 6, telling French outlet La Presse, “We’re hoping it’ll be almost as big an event. Other than GTA 6, it’s probably the biggest-budget AAA game”.ign
Star Citizen remains in alpha despite its unprecedented budget, with core systems still under active development. The full persistent universe is tentatively slated for release in 2027 or 2028, one to two years after Squadron 42 ships. Cloud Imperium has funded the project almost entirely through the direct sale of virtual ships and in-game items to its community — a model that has drawn both admiration for its ambition and criticism for selling expensive assets for a game still years from completion.pcgamer
