Paul McCartney announced on Thursday his first solo album in more than five years, a deeply personal 14-track collection titled “The Boys of Dungeon Lane,” set for release on May 29 through MPL/Capitol Records. The 83-year-old former Beatle simultaneously released the album’s lead single, “Days We Left Behind,” a spare, guitar-driven meditation on his Liverpool childhood.hotpress
The album draws its name from Dungeon Lane, a road near the Speke neighborhood where McCartney grew up, and the lead single serves as its emotional anchor. “This is very much a memory song for me,” McCartney said in a statement. “I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind and I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think: how can you write about anything else? It’s just a lot of memories of Liverpool”.musicradar
The track includes a striking passage referencing John Lennon: “We met at Forthlin Road, and wrote a secret code, to never be spoken. I stand by what I said, the promise that I made, will never be broken”. McCartney described the song as touching on Lennon and the street where he grew up, with Dungeon Lane situated nearby in the working-class area of Speke.hotpress
The album’s origins trace back five years to a meeting between McCartney and producer Andrew Watt, known for his work revitalizing legacy acts including the Rolling Stones and Elton John. While idly playing guitar over tea, McCartney stumbled upon a chord he did not recognize. He kept experimenting, changing one note then another, until he had a three-chord sequence that Watt suggested they record. That session produced the album’s opening track, “As You Lie There”.showbiz411
Recording continued during breaks in McCartney’s five-year world tour, with sessions split between studios in Los Angeles and Sussex. In keeping with the spirit of his McCartney trilogy, he played the majority of instruments himself across the 14 tracks, which span what the press materials describe as “Wings-style rock, Beatles-style harmonies, McCartney-style grooves, understated intimacy, melody-driven storytelling and character songs”.musicradar
The album is billed as McCartney’s most introspective work, exploring his post-war upbringing, the resilience of his parents, and early adventures shared with George Harrison and Lennon before the world had heard of Beatlemania. “Paul revisits these not as legends or folklore but as his personal memories,” the press release states. The announcement follows teaser posters that appeared across Liverpool on Tuesday, spotted and shared by McCartney’s brother Mike McGear McCartney, whose son Josh designed the artwork.ad-hoc-news
“The Boys of Dungeon Lane” follows McCartney III, released in December 2020, and arrives as McCartney prepares for a broader 2026 that includes the documentary “Man on the Run” and Sam Mendes’s forthcoming four-film Beatles cinematic project.showbiz411
