Global K-pop group BTS released their fifth full-length album, ARIRANG, on Friday, March 20, marking the septet’s first collective project in nearly four years after all seven members completed mandatory military service in South Korea. The 14-track album arrives alongside a music video for lead single “SWIM,” an upbeat alternative pop track about pressing forward through life’s uncertainties.koreatimes
The album takes its name from the traditional Korean folk song “Arirang,” long associated with themes of connection, distance, and reunion. BigHit Music described the project as “a deeply reflective body of work” that explores the group’s “identity and roots” over their 12-year career. In a February interview with GQ, Suga said the album would feature “a diversity of genres” and promised listeners would “see a more mature side of BTS this time around”.abc
RM, the group’s leader, contributed to the writing of 13 of the album’s 14 tracks, with all seven members holding songwriting credits across the project. The album was recorded over two months in Los Angeles beginning in July 2025, shortly after the final members were discharged from service. The production roster reads like a who’s who of global hitmakers: Diplo is credited on five tracks, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic on five, and additional contributions come from Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, Flume, Mike WiLL Made-It, El Guincho, and JPEGMAFIA, alongside longtime BTS producer Pdogg.koreatimes
The lead single “SWIM” carries the album’s central metaphor, interpreting the resolve to keep moving forward amid life’s turbulent waves as “a love for life,” according to BigHit Music. The cinematic music video was directed by Ukrainian filmmaker Tanu Muino, known for her Grammy-nominated work on Lil Nas X’s “Montero” and Harry Styles’ “As It Was,” as well as BTS member Jungkook’s solo hit “Standing Next to You”. The Korea Herald reported that American actress Lili Reinhart appears in the video, a casting choice that music critic Lim Hee-yun said signals “a clear intention to target the Western pop market”.chosun
The comeback extends well beyond the album. BTS will hold a free concert titled “BTS Comeback Live: ARIRANG” at Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square on Saturday, livestreamed globally on Netflix. A Spotify collaboration event in New York will follow days later. On March 27, Netflix will debut “BTS: The Return,” a documentary chronicling the making of the album. The group will then launch a world tour spanning 34 cities and 82 performances, the most dates ever for a K-pop act.thehoneypop
