Kate Winslet is heading to Middle-earth. The Oscar-winning actress has been cast as the female lead in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the upcoming film directed by Andy Serkis and produced by Peter Jackson, according to Deadline. The specific character Winslet will portray has not been disclosed by Warner Bros..cosmicbook
Serkis and Jackson spent much of the past year persuading Winslet to take the role, which will require her to uproot her family to New Zealand for filming from late May through October. The casting marks a reunion more than three decades in the making — Winslet’s breakout role came in Jackson’s 1994 film Heavenly Creatures, shot in New Zealand, and the two have not worked together since.flickeringmyth
Winslet had a near-miss with Middle-earth once before. She was considered for the role of Éowyn in Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy but declined due to scheduling conflicts.worldofreel
Winslet joins a growing roster of returning talent. Serkis will reprise his iconic motion-capture role as Gollum while also directing. Ian McKellen has confirmed he will return as Gandalf, and Elijah Wood has strongly hinted he will be back as Frodo, telling The Times UK earlier this month that there is “a genuine feeling of getting the band back together”. Whether Viggo Mortensen will return as Aragorn remains unconfirmed.ign
The screenplay, written by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, follows Aragorn’s quest to track down Gollum before the creature can reveal the location of the One Ring to Sauron. The story draws on Tolkien’s appendices and footnotes, filling in events set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.comicbookmovie
Production is scheduled to begin in New Zealand later this spring, with Warner Bros. targeting a theatrical release on December 17, 2027. The film represents the first new live-action Lord of the Rings feature in over a decade, and with Winslet now aboard, its cast continues to take shape as one of the most anticipated ensemble lineups in recent franchise history.gizmodo
