Legendary game creator Hideo Kojima unveiled an original anime series based on his acclaimed Death Stranding franchise during a Disney showcase event in Hong Kong on Wednesday, marking the studio’s first partnership with a global streaming platform.gamesradar
The series, titled Death Stranding Isolations (working title), will stream exclusively on Disney Plus in 2027 and will feature traditional hand-drawn 2D animation produced by Japan’s E&H Production studio. Kojima will serve as executive producer alongside director Takayuki Sano, known for his work on Attack on Titan: The Final Season and Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Character design concepts come from Ilya Kuvshinov, who previously designed characters for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045.kojimaproductions
The series will tell a completely new story separate from the video games, following multiple characters grappling with isolation as protagonist Sam Bridges traverses North America. According to the official synopsis, the narrative centers on “an old man trying to realize salvation through ways outside of the connection advocated by Bridges. A female warrior who tries to kickstart a world of constant fighting. A boy with a grudge against Bridges. A girl who embraces loneliness”.gamesradar
The announcement included concept art depicting a young man and woman in the Death Stranding universe, where lonesome souls of the dead manifest in the physical world, triggering massive explosions that have devastated civilization.kojimaproductions
The anime series represents the latest expansion of the Death Stranding franchise, which has captivated over 20 million players worldwide since the original game’s 2019 release. The sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, launched exclusively on PlayStation 5 in June 2025.gamespot
Death Stranding Isolations is separate from two other film adaptations currently in development: an animated feature titled Death Stranding: Mosquito, directed by Hiroshi Miyamoto and written by Aaron Guzikowski, which was unveiled in September; and a live-action film being produced by A24 and directed by Michael Sarnoski.gamesradar
E&H Production, founded in 2021 by former MAPPA director Sunghoo Park, has previously worked on Ninja Kamui and Jujutsu Kaisen. The studio’s involvement signals a commitment to high-quality animation for the project, which Kojima described as depicting the Death Stranding world “through a bold and yet subtle touch”.kojimaproductions
