Netflix announced Tuesday it has acquired exclusive worldwide rights to adapt the beloved board game Catan into an expansive slate of film and television projects, marking the first time the fictional island will come to screen after three decades of tabletop success.imdb
The streaming giant plans to develop live-action and animated films, scripted television series, unscripted content, and video games based on Klaus Teuber’s strategic masterpiece, originally released in 1995 as The Settlers of Catan. The game has sold over 45 million copies worldwide and been translated into more than 40 languages.yahoo
The deal with French publisher Asmodee Entertainment represents Netflix’s most ambitious board game adaptation to date, building on recent successes in gaming content. Production will be overseen by Darren Kyman from Asmodee, Pete Fenlon from Catan Studios, and Guido and Benjamin Teuber, sons of the game’s late creator. Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment will also produce.imdb
“Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” said Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for the US and Canada. “We’re thrilled to partner across series, features, animation, and games to bring this world to life for hardcore ‘Settlers’ and new fans alike.”yahoo
The Teuber brothers expressed enthusiasm for honoring their father’s vision, who died in April 2023 at age 70. “When our father Klaus Teuber first introduced Catan thirty years ago, he imagined an aspirational world where people would gather by trading, building and settling together — both at the table and beyond it,” they said in a joint statement.whats-on-netflix
Netflix’s Catan acquisition follows the streamer’s proven track record with gaming adaptations, including the critically acclaimed animated series Arcane and Castlevania. The company recently announced a reality competition series based on the board game Clue and secured rights to Monopoly earlier this year.screenrant
Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee, emphasized the cultural significance of board gaming in modern entertainment. “Millions of people are enjoying Catan since it was created, and for many, it remains a gateway to modern board gaming,” he said. “This also showcases that board gaming has truly become a part of popular culture and is a favored form of entertainment in households everywhere.”cbr
The Catan projects join Netflix’s expanding portfolio of game-based content, which includes the animated series Exploding Kittens, upcoming Assassin’s Creed adaptations, and the Gears of War film. As streaming platforms increasingly compete for distinctive content, Netflix’s investment in gaming intellectual property reflects the industry’s recognition of interactive entertainment as a rich source for storytelling across multiple formats.thewrap
