Radio Tavisupleba+2Radio Tavisupleba+2Radio Tavisupleba+1Tbilisi City Court judge Nana Shamathava made the decision to release Mikhail Timofeev on bail. According to lawyer Rusudan Mchedlishvili, the bail amount is 50,000 GEL. Timofeev, who is a former assistant to former Russian governor Sergei Furgal, was arrested in Georgia in January 2026 at Russia's request. Russia accuses him of participating in the murders and attempted murders of businessmen in 2004-2005, which Timofeev denies and considers politically motivated. Radio Tavisupleba+3
Along with his release, additional restrictions were imposed on Timofeev: he is prohibited from leaving Georgia, leaving his home between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, and he was ordered to report to the prosecutor's office three times a week and surrender his passport. According to the lawyer, the defense did not agree to these conditions and intends to appeal the decision to the Court of Appeals. Mchedlishvili stated that Timofeev has health problems and will not be able to pay the 50,000 GEL bail. Radio Tavisupleba+2
According to the lawyer, this motion serves as a safeguard by the prosecutor's office so that Timofeev remains in custody in the event that the UN Human Rights Committee deems the extradition admissible. The UN Committee prohibited Georgia from extraditing or deporting Timofeev to Russia until the case review is concluded. The defense also states that Interpol canceled the search for Timofeev in 2025, which is why his arrest was illegal. Publika+3
