John Ternus, the hardware engineering chief set to become Apple’s CEO on September 1, has laid out a product-first vision for artificial intelligence that stands in contrast to the AI-as-revenue-driver strategies embraced by much of Silicon Valley. In a pre-appointment interview, Ternus drew what Yahoo Finance described as “a philosophical line,” positioning AI as a means to improve products rather than as an end in itself.yahoo
The framing arrives at a pivotal moment for Apple. The company’s first attempt at an AI strategy, Apple Intelligence, launched in 2024 to widespread criticism. Many of the features promised at that year’s WWDC never shipped, and those that did were widely seen as underwhelming. A promised overhaul of Siri faced repeated delays, prompting what analysts at IDC called an “AI credibility test” heading into WWDC 2026.idc
That conference, held June 8 with Tim Cook delivering his final keynote as CEO, served as Apple’s answer. The company unveiled Siri AI, a ground-up rebuild of its voice assistant powered by a new generation of foundation models developed in partnership with Google. The revamped assistant features persistent conversations, onscreen awareness, multi-step task execution, and a standalone app — capabilities Apple had first outlined two years earlier but failed to deliver.apple
Apple is being cautious with the rollout. Siri AI launched in developer beta behind a waitlist, and IDC analysts expect many advanced features to arrive in subsequent iOS 27 updates rather than at the initial public release this fall.reddit
Ternus’s AI philosophy fits within a broader leadership vision that emphasizes design and engineering over the supply-chain mastery that defined the Cook era. According to Bloomberg reporting cited by AppleInsider, Ternus told his team that Apple will “continue to prioritize design, as it is central to our mission,” adding that the company has delivered “truly incredible design to more people than any company in history”.appleinsider
The incoming CEO’s first major product cycle will be the iPhone 18 series, expected in September alongside his formal assumption of the role. Cook will remain as executive chairman of Apple’s board.apple
Whether Ternus’s tool-not-target philosophy can restore confidence in Apple’s AI efforts — while keeping pace with rivals at Google, OpenAI, and others — will be among the defining questions of his tenure.
