Interpressnews+4Interpressnews+2Publika+1In order to accelerate the process of providing housing for IDPs, the Government of Georgia has introduced a program for issuing monetary compensation to families. The mentioned mechanism provides for the issuance of financial assistance in exchange for living space, which is voluntary and intended for those IDPs who have not previously benefited from state programs for long-term housing provision. The amount of compensation is 10 thousand GEL for each member of the family. Interpressnews+2
According to the assessment of the "Social Justice Center", the program poses a threat to the long-term and dignified resettlement of IDPs and creates risks of homelessness for families without housing and savings. The organization points out that the methodology for calculating the compensation is ambiguous, as is what its amount is based on, which, in their opinion, significantly lags behind the current cost of housing. The organization calls on the government to publicly explain the legal consequences of the program before its implementation and to create guarantees that those families who cannot purchase housing with the received funds will not be left without state support. At the same time, the "Social Justice Center" demands the strengthening and acceleration of existing long-term resettlement programs. Interpressnews+2
