Israel’s air force carried out a targeted strike on the Choueifat area on the outskirts of Beirut’s southern suburbs on Thursday afternoon, the first such attack near the Lebanese capital in weeks, as the military said it was targeting the head of the missile unit in the Imam Hussein Division, an Iran-linked militia operating alongside Hezbollah.apnews
The target was identified as Ali al-Husseini, described by Israeli Army Radio as the commander of the rocket system within the Imam Hussein Division. It was not immediately clear whether al-Husseini was killed in the strike. The attack hit a building in Choueifat, with at least one person reported killed and several wounded, according to Lebanese media reports.x
The Imam Hussein Division has been a repeated focus of Israeli operations in Lebanon. The militia, established in cooperation with Iran’s Quds Force and Hezbollah, originally operated in Syria before expanding its presence to southern Lebanon. Israel killed the division’s commander, Ali Muslim Tabaja, in a March strike, followed by another elimination of his successor just one week later. The Washington Institute has described the group as one of Iran’s primary operational arms, engaging in rocket attacks and ground offensives.israeltoday
The strike came despite a nominal ceasefire in effect since April 16, brokered by the United States. That truce, initially set for 10 days, has been extended twice — first for three weeks in late April, and then for 45 days on May 15. Under the agreement, Israel retains the right to act in self-defense against “imminent or ongoing threats” while refraining from offensive operations.reuters
Lebanon’s health ministry has reported that more than 400 people have been killed since the ceasefire took effect, amid numerous breaches from both sides.bbc
The Choueifat strike landed just one day before a new “security track” of negotiations is scheduled to begin at the Pentagon on May 29, involving military delegations from both Israel and Lebanon. A fourth round of political talks is also set for June 2–3 at the State Department.kurdistan24
The broader Israeli military campaign on Thursday extended well beyond Beirut. According to the Associated Press, at least 14 people were killed across southern Lebanon, including five women and children and a Lebanese soldier. Al Jazeera put the toll at 16 killed and 58 wounded. The Israeli military said it struck 135 Hezbollah targets in the preceding 24 hours.aljazeera
