North Korea on Wednesday announced it had tested a range of advanced weapons systems, including cruise missiles guided by artificial intelligence, marking the first time Pyongyang has publicly claimed to incorporate AI into its missile technology. Leader Kim Jong Un supervised the tests on Tuesday, state media KCNA reported.wral
The Korean Central News Agency said the tests involved ballistic missiles fitted with a “special mission warhead” designed for nuclear battlefield use, tactical cruise missiles guided by AI, and 240-millimeter rocket artillery equipped with “ultra-precision” navigation systems. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed detecting multiple projectiles, including at least one short-range ballistic missile that traveled approximately 80 kilometers toward western maritime zones, though it did not detail other weapon types involved in the launch.internazionale
Kim expressed “great satisfaction” with the results, particularly the cruise missile systems intended for deployment with long-range artillery units stationed near the border with South Korea, according to KCNA. He called for accelerated efforts to modernize artillery forces to ensure that “no one can match” their capabilities.wral
The tests are the latest in a sustained campaign by Pyongyang to bolster frontline forces along the inter-Korean border. Earlier this month, Kim visited a munitions factory to inspect the production of 155-millimeter self-propelled gun-howitzers scheduled for deployment at a border artillery unit this year. In a meeting with military leaders last week, he discussed transforming the frontier into “an impregnable fortress,” according to state media.opb
North Korea has conducted a series of weapons tests throughout 2026, including cluster-bomb warheads on ballistic missiles and electromagnetic weapons in April, and strategic cruise missile launches from its new Choe Hyon destroyer in March and April.reuters
Since the collapse of diplomacy with then-President Donald Trump in 2019, Kim has accelerated weapons development while deepening ties with Russia and China. Though Trump has expressed interest in reviving talks, Pyongyang has ignored these overtures and maintained that Washington must accept North Korea’s nuclear status as a precondition for negotiations.wral
