The sanctions span 22 sports, with weightlifting accounting for the largest share at 107 cases, followed by athletics with 93. Twenty-three anti-doping organizations worldwide participated in imposing the penalties. A Scandal That Reshaped Global Sport

The investigation traces its roots to 2015, when WADA first disclosed evidence of a state-backed doping initiative and declared Russia’s anti-doping agency, RUSADA, non-compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code. After RUSADA’s compliance was conditionally restored in 2018, investigators found that some of the Moscow laboratory data had been tampered with, leading to a four-year ban on Russia from major international competitions beginning in 2019.
