The World Anti-Doping Agency announced on Thursday that its years-long probe into Russia’s state-sponsored doping program has resulted in 302 sanctions against 291 Russian athletes, marking the conclusion of what WADA called the most far-reaching anti-doping investigation ever conducted.wada-ama
Operation LIMS, named after the Laboratory Information Management System from which WADA’s investigators retrieved data and biological samples from Moscow’s anti-doping laboratory in 2019, has now investigated all outstanding cases, the agency confirmed. Of the 291 athletes sanctioned, 11 received two separate penalties for distinct violations. Four additional cases remain awaiting final judgment.globalbankingandfinance
WADA president Witold Bańka said the investigation stands alone in the history of clean-sport enforcement. “Put simply, Operation LIMS is the most successful investigation in anti-doping history,” Bańka said. “An incredible 302 sanctions have now been imposed in the wake of Russia’s institutionalised doping scheme.”globalbankingandfinance
The sanctions span 22 sports, with weightlifting accounting for the largest share at 107 cases, followed by athletics with 93. Twenty-three anti-doping organizations worldwide participated in imposing the penalties. In March, Bańka and World Athletics president Sebastian Coe highlighted the successful conclusion of athletics-related cases during the 2026 World Indoor Athletics Championships, noting that 66 athletics sanctions were imposed through the collaboration of the Athletics Integrity Unit and WADA.devdiscourse
The investigation traces its roots to 2015, when WADA first disclosed evidence of a state-backed doping initiative and declared Russia’s anti-doping agency, RUSADA, non-compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code. After RUSADA’s compliance was conditionally restored in 2018, investigators found that some of the Moscow laboratory data had been tampered with, leading to a four-year ban on Russia from major international competitions beginning in 2019. That suspension ended in 2023, though Russian athletes have faced additional exclusions from international competitions following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.bbc
The conclusion of Operation LIMS comes as WADA broadens its investigative scope globally. Earlier in April, the agency reported that its Global Anti-Doping Intelligence and Investigations Network has led to the dismantling of 88 illicit laboratories and the seizure of nearly 90 tons of performance-enhancing drugs worldwide.wada-ama
