BioWare executive producer Mike Gamble confirmed today that Amazon’s upcoming Mass Effect television series will feature an original story set after the events of the original trilogy, avoiding a direct retelling of Commander Shepard’s iconic journey. The announcement came as part of the studio’s annual N7 Day celebrations on November 7.bioware
“The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy,” Gamble wrote in a blog post. “It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story — because after all … that’s YOUR story, isn’t it?”eurogamer
The writers room is currently active and working closely with BioWare to ensure the show fits within Mass Effect canon and connects to the timeline of the upcoming fifth game in the series. Production is expected to begin in Q4 2026, according to listings from Production Weekly.ign
Fast & Furious 9 writer Daniel Casey is attached as writer and executive producer, while Doug Jung, known for his work on Star Trek Beyond and Mindhunter, serves as showrunner. The production team also includes BioWare’s Mike Gamble, legendary Marvel Studios producer Ari Arad, and Karim Zreik, previously executive producer on Marvel TV’s Jessica Jones series.pcgamer
The decision to pursue an original story addresses longstanding concerns about adapting the choice-driven Mass Effect trilogy, where players make decisions ranging from character gender to major plot outcomes. This approach mirrors Amazon’s successful Fallout series, which told an original story within that franchise’s established lore rather than adapting the games directly.ign
Meanwhile, Gamble also used N7 Day to reassure fans about the next Mass Effect game, stating that BioWare is “heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect” following recent speculation about EA’s future after the company agreed to a $55 billion acquisition by a consortium including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners.ign
