Hundreds of masked protesters torched a bus, set vehicles ablaze, and blocked arterial roads across Belfast on Tuesday night after a 30-year-old Sudanese asylum seeker was charged with attempted murder over a knife attack that left a man in critical condition.
The violence, which began around 7:00 PM local time, prompted the Police Service of Northern Ireland to deploy armoured vehicles and helicopters as smoke rose from multiple parts of the city. PSNI had earlier declared the stabbing a “critical incident” and vowed to increase its street presence after footage of the attack spread rapidly online.nampa
The stabbing occurred shortly after 10:30 PM on Monday in the Kinnaird Avenue area of north Belfast. The victim, a man in his 40s, sustained what Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson described as “significant injuries to his eyes and serious slash wound injuries to his back and face”. A kitchen knife was recovered at the scene.straitstimes
Video showing the attacker straddling the victim and repeatedly slashing at his head and neck circulated widely on social media. Several bystanders intervened, one using a hurling stick, before police arrived.lemonde
The suspect was charged on Tuesday evening with attempted murder, possession of a bladed article in a public place, and threats to kill. He is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said the man had travelled from Sudan to Paris, then flew to Dublin before arriving in Belfast by bus in February 2023 to claim asylum. He was granted refugee status in September 2023.independent
“There is no trace of this suspect on any of our national security databases, and he was not known to the Police Service of Northern Ireland,” Boutcher said. Police said there was no information to suggest the attack was terrorism-related.france24
Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote on X that “the horrific attack in Belfast last night is sickening. I have absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets”. The leaders of Northern Ireland’s five largest parties at Stormont — Sinn Féin, the DUP, Alliance, the UUP, and the SDLP — issued a joint statement saying they were “united in our condemnation of the horrific incident” and appealing for calm.x

The Guardian reported that Tommy Robinson and Elon Musk amplified calls for protests on social media, turning the attack into what the paper described as the latest far-right “trigger event”. The Belfast Telegraph reported that Musk “jumped on the Belfast stabbing horror to promote his anti-immigration agenda”. DUP leader Gavin Robinson described the original assault as “medieval”, while Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly called it “savage and barbaric”.theguardian
Belfast’s Sudanese community expressed fear as tensions escalated. “You can never be safe,” one community member told the Guardian, as residents hunkered down amid the prospect of further unrest.theguardian
