Team Canada capped off a dominant preliminary round at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Sunday, routing France 10–2 in their final Group A matchup at Santagiulia Arena in Milan. The heavily favored Canadians secured the top seed in their group with a perfect 3-0 record, setting up a direct path to the quarterfinals as they pursue their first Olympic gold medal since Sochi 2014.
Canada wasted little time establishing control. Tom Wilson opened the scoring at 8:41 of the first period with his first goal of the Games, assisted by Drew Doughty and Connor McDavid. France responded just 13 seconds later when Floran Douay found the net to briefly tie the game at 1-1, but the Canadians quickly reasserted themselves.flohockey
Devon Toews restored Canada’s lead at 9:33, converting on a three-on-one rush with assists from Sidney Crosby and Cale Makar. Mark Stone then added a shorthanded goal with just four seconds remaining in the first period, giving Canada a 3-1 cushion heading into intermission.reddit
McDavid, who entered the game leading all tournament scorers with six points through two games, added to his tally with the primary assist on Wilson’s opener. The Edmonton Oilers captain has been on a mission at these Games, already setting records for most points through a team’s first two games of an Olympic tournament featuring NHL participation.sportsnet
“Connor is Connor. Best player. I’m not at all shocked,” teammate Drew Doughty said after Canada’s earlier win over Switzerland.sportsnet
Cale Makar extended Canada’s lead early in the second period, scoring 15 seconds into a power play after an interference penalty on France’s Yohann Auvitu. The Colorado Avalanche defenseman’s first Olympic goal made it 4-1, as Canada continued to pepper French goaltender Antoine Keller with shots throughout the contest.flohockey
France, featuring Montreal Canadiens forward Alexandre Texier as its lone NHL player, drops to 0-3 in group play and will now face a qualification playoff on Tuesday. Canada outshot France 17-6 in the first period alone and dominated possession throughout.cbssports
Head coach Jon Cooper’s squad has now outscored opponents 15-2 through three games, with goaltenders Jordan Binnington and Logan Thompson combining for stellar performances.
