Ryan Coogler became the first Black winner of the BAFTA Award for best original screenplay on Sunday, taking the prize for his vampire horror film “Sinners” at the 79th British Academy Film Awards ceremony at London’s Royal Festival Hall.yahoo
“I didn’t expect that,” Coogler said as he took the stage to massive applause. “This is nerve-wracking”. He went on to dedicate the award to writers everywhere: “For all the writers out there, when y’all look at that blank page, think of who you love, think of anybody who you’ve seen in pain that you identify with and wish they felt better and let that love motivate you. I’ll be forever grateful for this, thank you all”.imdb
The win adds to what has been a record-breaking awards run for “Sinners,” a period horror set in 1932 Mississippi that stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers who open a blues club only to confront vampires and the legacy of racism. The film earned 13 BAFTA nominations this year, the most ever for a film directed by a Black filmmaker, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It had already set a new all-time record with 16 Oscar nominations in January, surpassing the previous mark of 14 shared by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land”.evrimagaci
Coogler defeated a competitive field that included Kirk Jones for “I Swear,” Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie for “Marty Supreme,” Kleber Mendonça Filho for “The Secret Agent,” and Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier for “Sentimental Value”.theguardian
“Sinners” also won the BAFTA for best supporting actress, with British-Nigerian actor Wunmi Mosaku earning the honor for her role as Hoodoo priestess Annie, a character Coogler wrote specifically for her. In her acceptance speech, Mosaku said the role allowed her to reconnect with a part of herself she had “dimmed as an immigrant striving to fit in”.standard
The BAFTA victory bolsters Coogler’s position heading into the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, where he will again compete for original screenplay against “Marty Supreme,” “Sentimental Value,” “Blue Moon,” and “It Was Just an Accident”. At the Oscars, only one Black screenwriter has won in the original screenplay category: Jordan Peele for “Get Out” in 2018 — also, notably, a horror film.variety
The Warner Bros. release grossed roughly $369 million worldwide at the box office, making it the highest-grossing original film of the 2020s. With 10 Black artists among its Oscar nominees, “Sinners” has tied the record for the most Black nominees from a single film, previously held by “Judas and the Black Messiah,” according to Variety. Final Oscar voting runs from February 26 to March 5, with the ceremony airing on ABC.yahoo
