The largest FIFA World Cup in history is just seven days away. On June 11, Mexico will face South Africa at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca in the opening match of a 39-day tournament spanning 48 teams, 104 matches, and 16 host cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which will be rebranded as New York New Jersey Stadium to comply with FIFA’s corporate naming policy.fifa
FIFA has approved a sweeping set of rule changes designed to reduce time-wasting and increase the pace of matches. Players will have just five seconds to take throw-ins and goal kicks — failure to comply results in possession being awarded to the opponent or a corner kick conceded. Substituted players must leave the field within 10 seconds, or the incoming replacement cannot enter until at least one minute of play has elapsed. Players who receive on-field medical treatment must leave the pitch for 60 seconds after the restart.fox4kc
Every match will also feature mandatory three-minute hydration breaks midway through each half, regardless of weather conditions, effectively breaking games into four quarters. FIFA’s Chief Tournament Officer Manolo Zubiria said the breaks will occur “for every game, no matter where the games are played, no matter if there’s a roof, temperature-wise”.espn
Among the more novel additions, players who cover their mouths during confrontational exchanges with opponents now face a straight red card, a measure aimed at combating discrimination. VAR authority has been expanded to review second yellow cards and incorrectly awarded corner kicks.aljazeera
Across North America, host cities are ramping up preparations to welcome the global football community. FIFA Fan Festivals — free, public watch party destinations featuring live match screenings — will operate throughout the tournament in cities including Houston, Boston, Kansas City, and Los Angeles. In New York and New Jersey, fan zones are planned across multiple boroughs beginning June 13.fwc26houston
The tournament marks the first time three nations have jointly hosted a World Cup, with 11 U.S. cities, three in Mexico, and two in Canada serving as venues. Early trials of the new restart rules in MLS Next Pro added more than two minutes of ball-in-play time per match, and FIFA’s target for the tournament is between 62 and 64 minutes of actual play — up from averages below 60 minutes at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.britannica
