SEGA has released Football Manager 26 today, marking the most significant technical overhaul in the franchise’s three-decade history as Sports Interactive transitions from its proprietary RED engine to Unity for the first time.
The launch comes after an unprecedented year-long hiatus following the cancellation of Football Manager 25 in February, a decision studio director Miles Jacobson described as necessary to avoid “damaging us forever”. The game is now available worldwide across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, with the Switch version delayed until December 4.bbc
The switch to Unity represents the franchise’s biggest technological change in over 20 years, enabling what Sports Interactive calls “a completely refreshed management experience”. The new engine introduces enhanced lighting, more realistic player models, and significantly improved animations captured through partnerships with Hawk-Eye Innovations.sega
“FM26 pairs those movements with a vast suite of on-the-ball animations, with transitions between the two elevated by significant improvements to SI’s own animation technology,” Sports Interactive announced. The match engine now features dynamic weather effects, with rain visibly affecting pitch conditions and snow accumulating over time.sports-interactive
Early reviews have praised the visual improvements while noting persistent interface issues. PC Gamer’s review highlighted how “matches look more like real football” with players now showing “details that weren’t there before”. However, several outlets have criticized the redesigned user interface, with one review calling it “a disappointing step backwards” that “prioritises console players at the expense of the PC faithful”.pcgamer
Football Manager 26 introduces women’s football to the series for the first time, featuring over 36,000 female players across 14 leagues in 11 nations. The addition includes fully licensed competitions such as the Barclays Women’s Super League, Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga, and OBOS Damallsvenskan.bbc
The women’s game integration required extensive data collection starting in 2021, with Sports Interactive working directly with female football experts to ensure accuracy. “Finding specific information was challenging, as while data is abundant in men’s football, it is often lacking or inaccurate in the women’s game,” Jacobson explained.bbc
The game’s development faced significant challenges that led to FM25’s cancellation after multiple delays. Jacobson revealed that “about two hours in” to testing a Christmas 2024 build, he determined the game “wasn’t good enough” and “wasn’t to our normal quality level”.operationsports
Despite the extra development time, FM26 has received mixed reactions from players and critics. While the Unity engine improvements have been widely praised, concerns persist about missing features and interface changes. Gaming Bolt’s review noted the game “stumbles in some areas” despite being “a largely successful reinvention”.gamingbolt
The franchise has seen remarkable growth through subscription services, with player numbers reaching 19.09 million across all platforms as of summer 2025, up from 2 million in 2020. Football Manager 2024 became the highest-grossing entry in franchise history.eurogamer
Sports Interactive positions FM26 as “the starting point for the studio’s next 20 years”, with the Unity foundation expected to enable faster feature development and more ambitious future releases.footballmanager
