France on Tuesday presented what it called a “first of its kind” national roadmap to phase out coal by 2030, oil by 2045, and natural gas by 2050, laying out a comprehensive timeline for weaning Europe’s second-largest economy off fossil fuels entirely.gulfnews
The announcement came at the inaugural Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, Colombia, a two-day ministerial summit co-hosted by Colombia and the Netherlands that has drawn representatives from more than 50 countries. The United States was notably absent from the gathering, according to the New York Times.nytimes
France’s envoy at the conference, Benoit Faraco, said the roadmap establishes firm deadlines for ending fossil fuel consumption across the entire economy. Coal is set to be eliminated first, by 2030, followed by oil by 2045 and gas by 2050 for energy purposes. The plan also commits France to ending fossil fuel production, electrifying sectors such as heating and transport, and helping finance the transition in other countries.firstpost
Rather than introducing new pledges, the roadmap consolidates France’s existing climate and energy policies under a single framework. It formalizes targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions by five percent annually between 2024 and 2028, with the overarching goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.gulfnews
The plan builds on France’s Multiannual Energy Programming strategy published in February 2026, which set out to reduce fossil fuel’s share of final energy consumption from roughly 60 percent in 2023 to 40 percent by 2030 and 30 percent by 2035. That strategy includes construction of six new EPR2 nuclear reactors, expansion of offshore wind to 15 gigawatts by 2035, and installation of one million heat pumps per year by 2030. A ban on gas boilers in new buildings is set to take effect by the end of 2026.enerdata
France already generates the vast majority of its electricity from nuclear power, meaning hydrocarbons play a smaller role in its power grid than in most European nations. But fossil fuels still dominate in transport and heating, and France imports nearly 99 percent of its fossil gas.gouv
The roadmap was presented against the backdrop of a global energy crisis driven by conflict in the Middle East, which has led to fuel shortages and price spikes worldwide. Ike Roberts, an analyst quoted by AFP, described France’s roadmap as a document that “sets out a pathway for a country to transition the whole economy away from fossil fuels”.nytimes
