European football federations are closing ranks against calls to boycott the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Germany’s football association officially ruling out a withdrawal on January 31 despite escalating criticism of Trump administration policies both at home and abroad.
The German Football Association (DFB) announced Saturday that a boycott “is not currently being considered,” following weeks of internal debate sparked by Vice President Oke Göttlich, who publicly urged officials to “seriously consider” withdrawing from the tournament. In a statement that doubled as a rebuke to Göttlich, the DFB declared that “debates around political and sporting matters should be conducted internally rather than in public”.aljazeera
The DFB’s decision came days after former FIFA president Sepp Blatter endorsed calls for fans to stay away from U.S.-hosted matches. Blatter backed Swiss anti-corruption lawyer Mark Pieth, who warned supporters they could face deportation if they “fail to please officials upon arrival”.aljazeera
“I think Mark Pieth is right to question this World Cup,” Blatter wrote on X on January 26, advising fans that “there’s only one piece of advice: stay away from the USA!”theguardian
The 89-year-old’s intervention marked a reversal from his stance during his FIFA presidency, when he rejected calls to boycott the 2018 World Cup in Russia over concerns about Ukraine, stating “football cannot be boycotted in any country”.aljazeera
France has joined Germany in rejecting withdrawal. Sports Minister Marina Ferrari stated that “there is no desire from the ministry for a boycott of this great competition,” though she added, “I will not anticipate what could happen”. French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo said a boycott “is not under consideration”.as
Belgium similarly dismissed the prospect, with Sports Minister Jacqueline Galant telling The Brussels Times that “a boycott is clearly not being considered at this stage”. The Royal Dutch Football Association confirmed the Netherlands will participate despite a petition garnering over 150,000 signatures urging withdrawal.brusselstimes
Complicating matters are travel restrictions affecting fans from qualified nations including Haiti, Iran, Senegal, and Ivory Coast. Football Supporters Europe expressed alarm over the “complete absence of a security doctrine from FIFA,” with executive director Ronan Evain noting that reports of ICE agents potentially attending matches have left traveling supporters with “no clarity” about what to expect.bbc
Under FIFA regulations, nations that boycott could face exclusion from future competitions and potential liability claims, though the exact sanctions remain undefined. The governing body has stated it reserves the right to “take whatever action is deemed necessary” against withdrawing associations.sportbible
The tournament is scheduled for June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
