Ghost of Yotei has achieved remarkable commercial success in its debut week, securing the position as Sony’s biggest first-party PlayStation launch in Europe since Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in October 2023. The highly anticipated sequel from Sucker Punch Productions debuted at number two in both European unit sales and revenue charts, trailing only EA Sports FC 26.ign
According to GSD European Chart data, Ghost of Yotei’s launch sales are “roughly in line” with its predecessor Ghost of Tsushima, a remarkable achievement given the significantly different market conditions. The original launched in 2020 on PlayStation 4, which had an install base of approximately 110 million units compared to the PlayStation 5’s current 80 million. Additionally, Tsushima benefited from the pandemic-driven gaming boom when people were confined to their homes during lockdowns.ign
Analytics firm Alinea estimates that Ghost of Yotei has sold 1.6 million copies to consumers, rising to 2 million when including sell-in to retailers, generating nearly $100 million in revenue within its first week. The game has already recouped its estimated $60 million development budget twice over, marking an “instant return on PlayStation’s investment”.substack
The sequel has notably outperformed other recent Sony exclusives in launch week performance, surpassing titles including Helldivers 2, Astro Bot, and Death Stranding 2. While Helldivers 2 eventually became a phenomenon with 12 million copies sold over 12 weeks, its initial launch was more modest.gamesradar
Ghost of Yotei’s strong sales come despite organized boycott attempts that emerged ahead of its release. The controversy centered around the game’s shift from the original’s male protagonist Jin Sakai to female protagonist Atsu, along with harassment directed at voice actor Erika Ishii and the firing of a developer over social media comments.allthings
However, early sales data suggests the boycott had minimal commercial impact. The game topped PlayStation Store pre-order charts in multiple regions and led Amazon UK’s pre-order rankings ahead of launch. In Japan specifically, Ghost of Yotei sold 120,196 retail copies in its first week according to Famitsu data.reddit
“Ghost of Yotei has about 25% less users than Ghost of Tsushima (in its first month). That said, it has made back its dev budget, grossing around $130M,” industry executive Mark Kern posted on social media, describing the performance as commercially successful despite not being “a smash hit by any means”.eneba
The game’s 77% digital sales split aligns with Sony’s recent financial reports showing increased digital adoption across its platform. With its development costs recovered and strong initial momentum, Ghost of Yotei appears positioned for continued success as Sucker Punch Productions considers future projects in the franchise.substack
