Supergiant Games’ highly anticipated sequel Hades 2 is set to leave Early Access and launch on September 25 as a timed console exclusive for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, alongside PC releases on Steam and Epic Games Store. The announcement, made during Nintendo’s September 12 Direct presentation, marks the end of the game’s 16-month Early Access period that began in May 2024.
The most notable feature for Nintendo’s next-generation console is Hades 2‘s blazing performance capabilities. According to Supergiant Games, the game will run at 120 frames per second at 1080p resolution while in TV Mode on Switch 2. In handheld mode, the game maintains 60fps at 1080p, while the original Switch version runs at 60fps in 720p for both docked and handheld modes.supergiantgames
Nintendo demonstrated this performance during the Direct, showcasing smooth gameplay that takes full advantage of the Switch 2’s enhanced hardware capabilities. The improved technical specifications represent a significant leap from the original Switch’s performance limitations.
One of the most consumer-friendly aspects of the release is the comprehensive cross-save system. Players will be able to transfer their save data seamlessly between Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Steam, and Epic Games Store versions through a simple in-game menu. Additionally, anyone who purchases the original Switch version can download a free upgrade to the Switch 2 version if they own both consoles.supergiantgames
For PC players who have been experiencing the game during its Early Access phase, version 1.0 will arrive as a free automatic update on the same September 25 date.supergiantgames
The release strategy mirrors that of the original Hades, which launched first on Switch and PC before expanding to other platforms. While Hades 2 will be available simultaneously on PC platforms, PlayStation and Xbox versions have not been announced, though the game is confirmed as a “timed” console exclusive, suggesting other platforms will follow later.cbr
This exclusivity window could prove significant for Nintendo, as it provides a compelling reason for players to choose the Switch ecosystem, particularly given the enhanced 120fps performance on Switch 2.
A physical retail edition will launch on November 20, priced at $39.99 in North America. This edition includes a full-color Character Compendium booklet, a download code for the Hades 2 Original Soundtrack featuring nearly four hours of music, and a reversible cover. The physical version will be compatible with both Switch consoles.supergiantgames
Supergiant Games describes Hades 2 as “our team’s first-ever sequel” and notes they have been developing it for more than four and a half years. The studio calls it “the biggest game we’ve ever made” and hopes it will prove “a worthy successor to its namesake”.supergiantgames
The game continues the mythological narrative with MelinoĆ«, the Princess of the Underworld and sister to the original’s protagonist Zagreus, as she battles against Chronos, the Titan of Time. The sequel promises expanded gameplay mechanics, new weapons, additional gods, and a deeper story experience while maintaining the signature roguelike structure that made the original a critical and commercial success.
