British actor Harry Lloyd has been cast as legendary producer George Martin in Sam Mendes’ upcoming four-part Beatles film series, marking the completion of one of the final major roles in the ambitious cinematic project. The announcement came Friday through an interview with George Martin’s son, Giles Martin, on Virgin Radio UK’s Ryan Tubridy Show, with theatrical release scheduled for April 2028.billboard
Lloyd, best known for playing Viserys Targaryen in the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones, will portray the man often called the “fifth Beatle” for his extensive involvement in shaping the band’s distinctive sound. The role places him alongside Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison in Sony Pictures’ The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event.imdb
During the pre-recorded interview on Virgin Radio UK, Giles Martin, who is also involved with the production, praised Lloyd’s early work on the role. “He’s really good. He’s very committed,” Martin said, confirming the casting that had been anticipated by Beatles fans. Variety subsequently verified the casting with the production.billboard
The younger Martin’s involvement in the project adds a layer of authenticity to Lloyd’s portrayal, as Giles has worked extensively with his father’s recordings and legacy, including remixing Beatles albums for contemporary releases.billboard
George Martin, who passed away in 2016 at age 90, signed The Beatles to EMI’s Parlophone label in 1962 after other companies had rejected them. As their primary producer throughout their career, Martin contributed classical arrangements and novel recording techniques that helped define the band’s evolution from a raw Liverpool group to studio innovators.wikipedia
Martin produced nearly every Beatles album, with the exception of Let It Be, which was primarily overseen by Phil Spector. His contributions included the iconic string quartet on “Yesterday” and the orchestral arrangement on “A Day in the Life”. He was responsible for 30 number-one hits in the UK and 23 in the US during his career.beatlesbible
Lloyd joins a cast that recently expanded to include the women in The Beatles’ lives: Saoirse Ronan as Linda McCartney, Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, Aimee Lou Wood as Pattie Boyd, and Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Starkey. James Norton was cast in October as Brian Epstein, the band’s manager.billboard
The films are currently in production, with Mendes directing all four features from scripts by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Jack Thorne.bestclassicbands
