HBO Max’s head of original programming Sarah Aubrey described the upcoming Harry Potter television series as an unprecedented financial commitment during a keynote at the Series Mania TV conference in Lille, France, on Tuesday. Aubrey called the project “such a big commitment” for the streamer, characterizing it as a cost that would otherwise be unheard of in television.variety
“It’s just very special working on something that means that much,” Aubrey said. “There’s a lot of pressure, but it’s also very, very special. The world that has been created is absolutely extraordinary.”ign
The series plans to adapt each of J.K. Rowling’s seven Harry Potter novels into a full season of television, with actors signed to portray their characters through the end of a production schedule spanning much of the next decade. Filming began last summer at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K., with the first season expected to debut in early 2027 as an eight-episode run.ign
While HBO has not disclosed a specific budget figure, earlier reports have placed estimates for the total multi-season investment anywhere from $2 billion to over $5 billion, which would make it among the most expensive television productions ever undertaken. Alongside the keynote, HBO released a new image from the series showing star Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter preparing to play Quidditch.ign
Aubrey revealed that HBO had recently invited several Harry Potter influencers to tour the show’s sets, and that they had “burst into tears” upon seeing the Wizarding World brought to life. Earlier this month, leaked footage revealed a lavish physical recreation of Diagon Alley, the magical shopping street, built as a permanent set designed to be reused across future seasons.ign
Harry Potter fan site The Leaky Cauldron, which participated in the visit, described the physical sets as feeling complete rather than relying on a mix of practical elements and green screen. The series stars McLaughlin alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, with John Lithgow cast as Albus Dumbledore. Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes.screenrant
