Iran’s sports minister has warned that the national football team could stop playing its World Cup 2026 matches if unauthorized flags are displayed or anti-Iran slogans are chanted in stadiums, escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington just days before the tournament begins.
“We have informed FIFA that if unofficial flags are brought or slogans against the national team are chanted in the stadiums where Iran plays in the World Cup, the team manager will definitely be responsible for stopping the match,” Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali said on Monday, according to Iranian media outlets cited by Reuters. Donyamali added that Iran had received assurances “that no disruptive incidents will occur in the stadium during the match against Egypt,” the team’s opening fixture.reuters
The threat centers on concerns that Iranian diaspora groups opposed to Tehran’s government could display the pre-revolutionary Lion and Sun flag — a symbol of opposition to the Islamic Republic — inside World Cup venues. FIFA has indicated it would ban the pre-revolutionary flag and related apparel from stadiums under its code of conduct prohibiting political materials, a stance that has itself drawn legal challenges from advocacy groups in the United States.nytimes
The confrontation over flags adds another layer to an already fraught situation. Iran’s squad arrived in Tijuana, Mexico, on June 7 after being denied permission to establish a base camp in the United States. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Iranian players would be permitted to enter the country the day before each match, though Iran initially claimed its team was told it could only enter on match days and must leave immediately afterward. A Trump administration spokesperson stated that visas for “athletes and vital support staff” had been issued but warned: “We will not allow the Iranian team to misuse this system to smuggle terrorists into the United States under false pretenses”.bbc
Iran’s three group-stage matches are all scheduled in the United States, with the team commuting from its training base in Tijuana — located just south of the U.S. border near San Diego. The Iranian football federation relocated its camp from the U.S. to Mexico in late May after receiving FIFA approval, citing the proximity of Tijuana to Los Angeles as an advantage.apnews
The dispute reflects broader tensions between Washington and Tehran amid their ongoing conflict. Iran has repeatedly accused the United States of politicizing the tournament, while insisting it has no plans to withdraw from the World Cup entirely. Whether the team would follow through on halting a match mid-game remains unclear, but Donyamali’s statement represents the most direct threat yet from Iranian officials as the opening whistle approaches.aljazeera
