In a phone conversation with NBC News on Friday, President Trump said he had asked Israel to agree to the ceasefire. “It’s a positive,” he remarked, calling it “a little icing on the cake”. Despite the agreement, reports of Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon continued after the 4 p.m. deadline. Al Jazeera reported at least 12 airstrikes and ongoing artillery bombardments after the ceasefire was supposed to take effect, including a drone strike that killed two people on a motorcycle. Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, affirmed that Israel was “firmly committed to an immediate ceasefire” and had ceased offensive actions.
