Four-time world champions Italy were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday after a 4-1 penalty shootout loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Zenica, becoming the first former World Cup winners to miss three consecutive editions of the tournament.espn
Gennaro Gattuso’s side took an early lead when Moise Kean capitalized on a mistake by Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, calmly finishing to make it 1-0 in the 15th minute at Bilino Polje Stadium. It was Kean’s second goal in as many playoff matches after scoring in last week’s semifinal victory over Northern Ireland.cbssports
The dynamics of the match shifted before halftime when center-back Alessandro Bastoni was shown a straight red card in the 42nd minute for a last-man tackle on Amar Memic, leaving Italy to play with 10 men for the remainder of the contest. Bosnia pressed relentlessly with the extra man, and substitute Haris Tabakovic finally broke through in the 79th minute to level the score at 1-1. Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made at least four crucial saves to keep the Azzurri alive through extra time, but neither side could find a winner in the additional 30 minutes.espn
In the shootout, Italy’s misery was swift. The Azzurri hit the crossbar and skied another attempt, converting just one of their four penalties, while Bosnia were flawless, scoring all four of theirs to clinch a 4-1 victory from the spot.espn
The result extends a painful era for Italian football. Italy last appeared at a World Cup in 2014 in Brazil and have not won a knockout-round match at the tournament since the 2006 final, when they beat France to lift the trophy. They were eliminated from qualifying by Sweden ahead of the 2018 tournament and by North Macedonia before the 2022 edition.espn
For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the victory in Zenica ends a 12-year wait and secures their place at a second World Cup. They will join Group B alongside co-hosts Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar when the tournament kicks off in North America this summer. Bosnia had already shown their nerve in the playoff semifinal, beating Wales on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Cardiff.bolavip
Tuesday’s other European playoff finals also produced drama: Sweden qualified with a last-gasp 3-2 win over Poland courtesy of a Viktor Gyökeres goal in the 88th minute, Turkey beat Kosovo 1-0, and Czechia overcame Denmark 3-1 on penalties to return to the World Cup for the first time since 2006.espn
