Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics Opens with Design-Forward Spectacle

The 2026 Winter Olympics opened Friday at Milan’s San Siro Stadium, marking Italy’s first Winter Games in 20 years with a visual identity that design critics have called distinctively Italian in its celebration of gesture and movement.

The Games’ “Look of the Games” identity, developed under the direction of Raffaella Paniè, showcases the “Vibes” design system—a four-element scheme featuring curved shapes, intersecting lines, and a soft blur effect reminiscent of snow. The pictograms, which depict sports through flowing white lines rather than traditional solid figures, have drawn praise for their departure from conventional Olympic iconography.grafismasakini

A Visual Identity Rooted in Italian Heritage

The design draws inspiration from Italy’s avant-garde traditions, echoing the work of Lucio Fontana, Carlo Mollino, and Ettore Sottsass. The concept emphasizes what organizers describe as “the human gesture,” capturing movement and artistry through abstract visual elements.grafismasakini

“The Look of the Games shows an extraordinary visual language that accentuates the appeal of our competition venues and cities, and expresses a new concept of Italian beauty,” said Andrea Varnier, CEO of Milano Cortina 2026.olympics

The official logo, designed by Landor (a WPP company), features a stylized “26” that appears as if traced by a finger on a frosted surface. Selected through an unprecedented public vote that received approximately 871,000 ballots from 169 countries, the “Futura” emblem won with 75 percent of the vote.finestresullarte

Marco Balich Returns Home for Opening Ceremony

Creative director Marco Balich, who has overseen 16 Olympic ceremonies throughout his career, returned to his home country to helm the opening spectacle. The Venice-born producer, whose credits include Turin 2006, Rio 2016, and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, built the ceremony around the theme “Armonia” (Harmony).olympics

“The Opening Ceremony transcends mere technological showcase or visual spectacle,” Balich said. “Primarily, it narrates a story filled with human experiences and emotions”.olympics

The ceremony broke new ground as the first in Olympic history to span multiple locations simultaneously, with segments broadcast from San Siro, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno, and Predazzo.monocle

Design Legacy and Television Considerations

Paniè, who previously led the visual identity for Turin 2006, emphasized the challenges of designing for broadcast. “Some colour combinations that looked great within our design system turned out to be distracting on TV, pulling attention away from the athletes,” she told The Thing Company. The team conducted extensive camera testing during Short Track events in Milan to refine their approach.substack

The ceremony featured performances by Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, and Lang Lang, with an expected audience of 60,000 spectators at San Siro and millions worldwide. For the first time, two Olympic cauldrons—designed with motifs inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s geometric “Knots”—were lit simultaneously in Milan and Cortina.accio
