MSNBC announced a multi-year distribution agreement with Sky News today, positioning the cable network to expand its international coverage as it prepares to operate independently from NBC News and rebrand as MS NOW. The partnership, set to begin October 1, grants MSNBC access to Sky News’ network of 11 international bureaus and more than 500 journalists across cities including Beijing, Jerusalem, and Moscow.skygroup
The timing is strategic as MSNBC faces a pivotal transition. The network will completely separate from NBC News on October 20 and drop its iconic peacock logo as parent company Comcast moves forward with spinning off its cable networks into a new public company called Versant. MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler emphasized the partnership’s significance, stating, “In this moment of consequential and historic news events happening around the world that are rapidly reshaping our collective future, we are honored to bring Sky News’ premium, on-the-ground reporting and roster of top journalists to the MSNBC community”.reuters
The partnership represents MSNBC’s effort to build independent newsgathering capabilities while maintaining global reach. Ian Sherwood, a veteran NBC News journalist with a decade of international reporting experience, has been named MSNBC’s Director of International Newsgathering to oversee the collaboration. The network has been actively recruiting journalists and expanding its Washington staff in preparation for operating autonomously from NBC News.reuters
Sky News brings substantial credibility to the partnership, having won BAFTA awards, International Emmy Awards, and being named Royal Television Society News Channel of the Year 17 times. Media analysts rate Sky News as having high factual reliability and balanced coverage. Sky News Group Executive Chairman David Rhodes expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating the partnership “will put that eyewitness reporting in front of even greater audiences in the U.S. and around the world”.wikipedia
The arrangement comes as traditional cable networks face mounting pressure from streaming services and cord-cutting trends. Comcast’s decision to spin off cable channels including MSNBC, CNBC, and USA Network into Versant reflects the industry’s broader restructuring efforts. The spinoff, expected to be completed by January 2026, aims to create a focused entity better positioned for growth in the evolving media landscape.mtsu
Versant reported declining revenue and profits in the first half of 2025, with earnings falling 16% to $670 million, underscoring the challenges facing traditional cable networks. However, the company will launch with substantial cash flow and conservative leverage, providing flexibility for future investments and potential acquisitions.yahoo
