Rubio Attends NATO Meeting in Sweden Amid US Troop Tensions

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Helsingborg, Sweden, on Friday for a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting, carrying a message from President Donald Trump about allied shortcomings during the Iran conflict while trying to calm growing European anxiety over Washington’s shifting military commitments on the continent.

Trump’s Troop Reversal Bewilders Allies

NATO allies expressed bewilderment at the meeting over Trump’s decision to deploy 5,000 troops to Poland just weeks after ordering the withdrawal of the same number from Europe. Trump announced the deployment on Truth Social, citing his relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki. Approximately 80,000 U.S. troops remain stationed across Europe.usnews

On his departure to Helsingborg, Rubio declined to discuss further changes to the American military presence in Europe. The meeting came after Rubio had previously questioned why NATO allies such as Italy and Spain were not backing Washington’s push against Iran, and after he warned in March that the U.S. may need to re-examine its ties with the alliance over European reluctance to support the Iran campaign.washingtonpost

Burden Sharing and Ukraine Dominate Agenda

The State Department said Rubio would “discuss the need for increased defense investment and greater burden sharing in the Alliance”. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte used the gathering to press members on defense spending, stating, “What I want to achieve is that the burden is more evenly spread, that there is more burden sharing here”. The meeting also addressed continued support for Ukraine, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister participation confirmed ahead of the session.reuters

Future of US Presence in Europe

The meeting followed remarks earlier in the week by Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, who confirmed the 5,000-troop withdrawal and said Europe should “absolutely” expect additional U.S. redeployments over time as allies build their own defense capacity. “As the European pillar of the alliance gets stronger, this allows the U.S. to reduce its presence in Europe and limit itself to providing only those critical capabilities that allies cannot yet provide,” Grynkewich said.militarytimes

The Helsingborg gathering is one of the final high-level NATO assemblies before the alliance’s leaders convene for a summit in Ankara, Turkey, scheduled for July.apnews
