Netflix and the BBC have officially announced a two-season sequel to the critically acclaimed crime drama “Peaky Blinders,” marking a new chapter for the beloved Birmingham-based gangster saga. The announcement, made on October 2, brings Steven Knight back as creator and writer, with original star Cillian Murphy returning as executive producer.bbc
Set in 1953 Birmingham, the sequel will follow a new generation of Shelbys as the city rebuilds from the devastation of World War II. “After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel,” reads the official synopsis. “In a new era of Steven Knight’s ‘Peaky Blinders,’ the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions”.deadline
The sequel represents a significant shift from the original series, focusing on younger members of the Shelby family rather than continuing with Tommy Shelby’s story directly. Knight expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I’m thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride”.bbc
Each season will consist of six hour-long episodes, produced by Kudos and Garrison Drama, the same production companies behind the original six seasons and the upcoming feature film “The Immortal Man”. Filming will take place at Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham, maintaining the authentic setting that made the original series distinctive.deadline
The sequel series will pick up after the events of “The Immortal Man,” the Peaky Blinders feature film currently in post-production. Originally scheduled for 2025, the film has been pushed to a 2026 release date. The movie, set during World War II, stars Murphy reprising his role as Tommy Shelby alongside new cast members including Barry Keoghan, Rebecca Ferguson, and Tim Roth.townandcountrymag
While details about the sequel’s cast remain under wraps, speculation suggests that characters like Duke Shelby, Tommy’s illegitimate son introduced in the series’ final season, may play a central role. Sources have indicated that Barry Keoghan’s character in the film could potentially bridge to the new series, though this remains unconfirmed.whats-on-netflix
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, highlighted the show’s enduring appeal: “This game-changing show made a huge impact when it first came to our screens 12 years ago, and it remains one of the BBC’s most-loved dramas. Steven has worked his magic once again, and we can’t wait to see his scripts brought to life when filming begins in Birmingham”.bbc
