Netflix Officially Announces KPop Demon Hunters Sequel

Netflix confirmed on Thursday that a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is in production, with co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning to write and direct the follow-up to the streaming platform’s most-watched film of all time. Sony Pictures Animation will again produce the animated musical, which follows a fictional K-pop girl group whose members secretly hunt demons.gizmodo

“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” Kang wrote in a post shared on Netflix’s social media accounts. “There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”gizmodo

A Record-Breaking Franchise

The original KPop Demon Hunters premiered on Netflix on June 20, 2025, and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The film amassed 236 million views in its first 91 days, dethroning Red Notice as the platform’s most-watched movie ever. By the end of 2025, it had accumulated 481.6 million views globally — more than 3.5 times the next most-watched film in that period. Its soundtrack produced four simultaneous Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits, including “Golden,” which reached No. 1.variety

The sequel announcement also marks the beginning of a new exclusive multi-year writing and directing deal between Kang, Appelhans, and Netflix across animation, according to Variety. Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria praised the original for sparking a “global fandom” that “crossed languages and generations.”theguardian

A Long Wait Ahead

While an initial 2029 target release date has circulated since Bloomberg first reported the deal in November 2025, that timeline now appears unlikely. Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson recently indicated the date was overly optimistic, and The Hollywood Reporter noted that Kang and Appelhans are “only in the early stages” and will turn their full attention to the sequel after awards season. Sony executives have compared the sequel’s development trajectory to the Spider-Verse franchise, suggesting a release closer to 2030.kotaku

The announcement comes just days before the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, where KPop Demon Hunters is nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden”. A win in either category would mark a historic first for South Korean artists at the Oscars.yahoo
