Netflix premiered its highly anticipated crime thriller “Black Rabbit” on September 18, 2025, featuring A-list stars Jude Law and Jason Bateman as volatile brothers entangled in New York City’s dangerous underworld. The eight-episode limited series has garnered critical acclaim, with some reviewers hailing it as potentially one of Netflix’s greatest crime thrillers ever.
The series centers on Jake Friedkin (Law), the charismatic owner of Black Rabbit, an upscale Manhattan restaurant and VIP lounge, whose carefully constructed world unravels when his troubled brother Vince (Bateman) returns with dangerous creditors in tow. Screen Rant praised Bateman’s performance as “a career best,” comparing the series favorably to his previous Netflix hit “Ozark,” calling it “even better than Ozark”.screenrant
The supporting cast includes Oscar winner Troy Kotsur, who transforms from his heartwarming “CODA” role into a menacing mob boss Joe Mancuso. According to an interview with TODAY, Kotsur revealed the role was specifically written for him after creators Zach Baylin and Kate Susman learned of his desire to play a villain. “We have never really seen a deaf villain on screen before,” Kotsur explained, noting how he developed a unique one-handed signing style to suggest his character always carries a weapon.youtube
Critics have responded positively to the series’ authentic New York atmosphere and compelling performances. Vulture described it as “a riveting and devastating ride, anchored by some of the most mercurial performances you’ll see on TV this year”. The series currently holds a 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 16 critic reviews.vulture
The production team brought together notable talent both in front of and behind the camera. Bateman directed the first two episodes, while his “Ozark” co-star Laura Linney helmed episodes three and four, marking a reunion for the Emmy-winning duo. The series was filmed entirely on location throughout New York City between April and September 2024, utilizing authentic venues including the historic Bridge Café at 279 Water Street in Manhattan, which served as the titular restaurant.radiotimes
Created by Baylin and Susman, “Black Rabbit” explores themes of family loyalty, addiction, and moral decay within the high-stakes restaurant industry, positioning itself as Netflix’s latest prestige crime drama following the success of previous series like “Ozark” and “Baby Reindeer.”
