The team behind the blockbuster Paddington franchise has announced their next family film project: the first-ever feature adaptation of Roger Hargreaves’ beloved Mr. Men Little Miss characters.
Studiocanal and Heyday Films revealed today they are developing the film in partnership with Mister Men Limited, a Sanrio Group company. The project marks the cinematic debut for the iconic British children’s book series, which has sold more than 250 million copies since the Mr. Men series launched in August 1971.variety
The announcement builds on Studiocanal and Heyday’s success with Paddington, which has become the largest independent family franchise of all time. The three Paddington films have collectively earned $688 million at the worldwide box office, with the most recent installment, Paddington in Peru, released in 2024.liveforfilm
David Heyman, producer at Heyday Films whose credits include the Harry Potter series and Barbie, described the Mr. Men and Little Miss books as “an irresistible opportunity for a bold and imaginative feature film adaptation”. Anna Marsh, CEO of Studiocanal, called the project “an incredible privilege, and an undeniable opportunity for joy, mischief, and adventure”.yahoo
Since Sanrio acquired the Mr. Men Little Miss brand in 2011, the character roster has expanded to more than 90, including special editions inspired by cultural icons. The franchise remains the top-selling children’s book series in France and a leading preschool brand in the United Kingdom.variety
The film will build on a new animated series currently streaming on YouTube and a second series in production for television. Adam Hargreaves, son of creator Roger Hargreaves and current author of the series, expressed his enthusiasm for the adaptation. “My father would have been thrilled, and I can’t say how proud I am of his creation that it merits an appearance on the big screen,” he said.tribune
Tomokuni Tsuji, president and CEO of Sanrio, noted the film advances the company’s vision “to build an IP platform delivering next-generation joy as a global entertainment company”.yahoo
