Andy Weir’s science fiction novel “Project Hail Mary” has surged back to the top of major bestseller charts ahead of its highly anticipated film adaptation, which arrives in theaters on March 20. Critics have been effusive. Rotten Tomatoes compiled first reactions calling it “2026’s first great blockbuster” and “a staggering epic: big in spectacle and even bigger in heart, emotion, and awe-inspired wonder”. The score makes it Gosling’s highest-rated film on the aggregator, surpassing “Drive” at 93% and “La La Land” at 91%. Preview screenings began this weekend in the UK on March 14 and 15, with Amazon Prime members gaining exclusive early access on March 16.digitalspy
Gosling was the first major talent attached to the project, having read the manuscript before it was published. “I was obviously so moved that I’ve dedicated almost six years to making it,” Gosling told io9. “I think it’s that special”. Goddard, who also adapted Weir’s “The Martian” for its Oscar-nominated screenplay, called Lord and Miller essential to bringing the alien character Rocky to life: “Nobody else could have done it”.gizmodo
The novel, first published in 2021, won the Hugo Award for Best Novel and had its film rights acquired by MGM for $3 million before the book even hit shelves. The $200 million-plus production is projected to open to between $50 million and $70 million in its first weekend, according to Box Office Pro.filmogaz
The book’s chart resurgence mirrors the pattern set by Weir’s debut, “The Martian,” which saw renewed sales following its 2015 film adaptation. As early as March 8, “Project Hail Mary” ranked third on the New York Times bestseller list and fifth on Amazon’s charts — positions that have only climbed as the release date approaches. Actor Josh Gad, who attended an early friends-and-family screening, called the film “the first masterpiece of 2026” and urged audiences to “see this movie on the biggest screen possible”.facebook
