Queen launched a special five-part documentary series this week to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their iconic song “Bohemian Rhapsody,” with the first episode premiering on October 31, 2025 – exactly 50 years after the original single’s release.blabbermouth
The series, titled “Queen The Greatest,” features exclusive interviews with surviving band members Sir Brian May and Roger Taylor, who reveal that the legendary track was part of a natural evolution rather than a creative departure for the band. The inaugural episode, “The Path to Bohemian Rhapsody,” explores how earlier Queen compositions laid the groundwork for their most celebrated song.udiscovermusic
According to May and Taylor, “Bohemian Rhapsody” represented the culmination of experimental songwriting that began with Queen’s earliest recordings. “It’s interesting. ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is viewed as a giant step for Queen creatively, but from the inside, it didn’t feel that way,” May explained in the series. “You’ve only got to look at the first album, with ‘My Fairy King'”.blabbermouth
Taylor pointed to “March of the Black Queen” from 1974’s Queen II as an even more direct precursor, describing it as “a lot more complicated in many ways than ‘Bohemian Rhapsody'” due to its numerous sections and elaborate vocal arrangements. The drummer noted that the track “involved a lot of rehearsal, a lot of singing and so many different little sections”.antimusic
Both musicians emphasized that working with Freddie Mercury’s unconventional creative process had become routine by 1975. “You didn’t know where Freddie was coming from,” May recalled. “He comes in and goes ‘there’s this bit, and there’s another bit we’ll do, and there’s the operatic and then there’s another bit we will do.’ And basically, you have two choices, either going ‘well we’re really not feeling it,’ which we sometimes would do, or we all dive in, and the whole Queen machine swings into action”.hennemusic
Coinciding with the documentary series, Queen released lavish vinyl reissues of both “Bohemian Rhapsody” and its parent album A Night At The Opera. The single was reissued on October 31 as heavyweight blue 7″ and 12″ vinyl, along with a picture disc and blue cassette format. A Night At The Opera received a crystal clear vinyl pressing with gold labels, released on October 18 in the UK as part of National Album Day.themusicuniverse
The 1975 album marked a pivotal moment for Queen, becoming their first UK number one and reaching the top of charts in five countries. “Bohemian Rhapsody” itself spent nine weeks at number one in the UK upon its original release.udiscovermusic
The remaining four episodes of “Queen The Greatest” will be released weekly throughout November 2025, providing fans with an in-depth exploration of one of rock music’s most enduring masterpieces.blabbermouth
