Riot Games is developing a comprehensive overhaul of League of Legends, internally dubbed “League Next,” with a planned release in 2027, according to a report published Wednesday by Bloomberg. The update represents the biggest transformation in the game’s nearly 16-year history, five current and former employees told Bloomberg reporter Cecilia D’Anastasio.bloomberg
The overhaul will feature a complete visual redesign encompassing character aesthetics, user interface, and battle arenas, alongside technical improvements to the game’s underlying infrastructure. According to the report, Riot aims to make the aging game more appealing to new players while streamlining future development. The company is reworking the technical foundations to facilitate smoother and more frequent updates.escapistmagazine
League of Legends continues to command a massive global audience, with over 100 million monthly active players. The game, which launched in October 2009 as a multiplayer online battle arena title, remains one of the world’s premier esports. The 2025 World Championship finals between T1 and KT Rolster peaked at 6.7 million concurrent viewers, making it the second most-viewed esports event in history.bloomberg
Bloomberg also reported that Riot has announced an internal reorganization, though specific details about the restructuring were not provided. The company previously restructured its leadership in 2024, promoting John Needham to President of Publishing and Esports to better integrate its games, esports, music, and entertainment divisions.ign
The timing of League Next coincides with Riot’s expanded media ambitions, particularly following the success of Arcane, the animated Netflix series based on the game’s universe. The show became Netflix’s most popular program in over 60 countries upon its second season premiere in November 2024. The disparity between the show’s modern aesthetic and the game’s aging visuals has been noted by industry observers.ign
League of Legends pioneered and popularized the MOBA genre after its 2009 release, inspired by the Warcraft III custom map Defense of the Ancients. Riot has since expanded the franchise with mobile game Wild Rift and digital card game Legends of Runeterra.wikipedia
