Russian Frigate Fires Warning Shots at British Yacht in English Channel

Sailors aboard the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich fired warning shots at a UK-registered civilian yacht in the English Channel on Tuesday morning, in an incident the British Ministry of Defence said it is investigating.

The shots were fired at approximately 11:40 a.m. local time, roughly 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight — outside UK territorial waters, in the stretch of sea between the island and Normandy, France. The rounds landed within approximately 500 metres of the yacht, according to reports, but caused no injuries or damage. The yacht continued its journey.theguardian

Royal Navy Response

HMS Mersey, one of the Royal Navy’s offshore patrol vessels, was monitoring the Admiral Grigorovich at the time of the incident. A seaboat from HMS Tyne, a sister patrol vessel, was dispatched to the yacht to gather details and check on the safety of the crew.rte

The Defence Ministry said in a statement: “We are investigating reports of an incident in the Channel”. Defence sources indicated they view the episode as isolated and unconnected to the Royal Navy’s recent boarding of the sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tanker Smyrtos.apnews

Heightened Tensions in the Channel

The incident comes just two days after Royal Marine Commandos boarded and seized the Smyrtos, a Cameroon-flagged tanker carrying over 100,000 tonnes of Russian crude oil, in the first UK-led operation of its kind since the start of the war in Ukraine. The tanker’s captain, an Indian national, has been charged with sanctions violations.bbc

The Admiral Grigorovich has been a persistent presence in waters around Britain for months. Since April, the frigate has escorted sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tankers through the English Channel, openly defying Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s pledge to crack down on the illicit oil trade. HMS Mersey, HMS Tyne, and HMS Severn have monitored the warship’s movements throughout that period.metro

A Dangerous Escalation?

The Kremlin has previously described Russia’s naval escort operations as protection against “piracy,” with spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying Moscow “considers itself entitled to take measures to protect its interests”. Tuesday’s warning shots mark the first time during this extended standoff that weapons have been discharged in the vicinity of a civilian vessel, raising questions about the rules of engagement governing Russian warships transiting busy international shipping lanes.unn
