UN Reports Ukraine May Civilian Casualties Highest Since April 2022

More civilians were killed and injured in Ukraine in May 2026 than in any other month in the past four years, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine said in its monthly update released on June 12.unn

The mission verified that conflict-related violence killed at least 274 civilians and injured 1,763 in May, bringing the total above 2,000 for the month — a 93 percent increase compared with May 2025 and a 23 percent increase over April 2026.ohchr

“With more than 2,000 civilian casualties, the month of May saw more civilian casualties than any other month since April 2022,” said Danielle Bell, head of the monitoring mission.globalissues

Drones and Long-Range Strikes Drive the Toll

The mission identified the use of powerful weapons by Russia in urban areas as the main driver of the high casualty toll. Long-range weapons — missiles and drones — accounted for 45 percent of all casualties, most of which occurred in urban centers far from the frontline.globalissues

Short-range drone attacks were the primary cause of civilian casualties near the frontline, with at least 64 killed and 539 injured from such strikes in May alone. The pattern continued a trend observed throughout 2026, with short-range first-person-view drones inflicting growing harm on civilians in areas close to active combat.un

A Worsening Trajectory

The May figures cap a period of escalating civilian harm. In the first four months of 2026, at least 815 civilians were killed and 4,174 injured — 21 percent more than the same period in 2025. The full-year toll for 2025 had already represented a 31 percent increase over 2024, with at least 2,514 killed and 12,142 injured.ohchr

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, the conflict has killed at least 15,172 civilians and injured more than 41,000, according to UN figures published earlier this year.reliefweb

The monitoring mission also noted that Russian authorities reported 47 civilians killed and 298 injured on Russian territory in May. Just days after the reporting period closed, Russia launched another large-scale overnight attack on June 2 using 656 long-range drones and 73 missiles, killing at least 22 civilians and injuring 145 across multiple Ukrainian cities.ungeneva
